INTRODUCTION:
Compston House was built over 100 years ago of traditional lakeland stone.
The house is semi-detached on one side, with a drive separating it from
the neighbour on the other side.
PRE-ARRIVAL:
Tariff and availability can be accessed online via the website www.compstonhouse.co.uk,
or can be provided by phone (015394 32305). The website provides photos
of some of the rooms, and also lists directions to Compstons House by
car, train or bus. Local taxi or bus service is available at the Windermere
rail station (4 miles away). The bus stop for Ambleside Kelsick Road is
just up the road from Compston House.
ARRIVAL AND CAR PARKING FACILITIES:
Each double room comes with free parking. Deluxe rooms come with their
own off-road parking space, one of which is on site in the drive next
to the house; other double rooms come with a permit to use the local pay
and display car parks for free. There is also free street parking for
one hour during the day and overnight from 5pm to 10am. Disabled badges
can be used in the local car parks or on the street.
MAIN ENTRANCE AND RECEPTION:
There are 3 wide stone steps to the entrance to the house, but no handrails.
There are two side-hung doors to enter Compston House. Guests are provided
with a key to both doors. Reception is generally open for check-in between
11am and noon; then again from 4pm to 7pm. Guests can register standing
at the reception counter, or seated in the nearby lounge if they prefer.
Pen and paper are provided at reception, as well as extra keys if needed.
The staircase, which has a handrail on
one side, is just off the reception area. There are 21 steps to the first
floor bedrooms, including one small landing. There are a futher 17 steps
to the second floor bedrooms. There are no ground floor bedrooms or ground
floor toilet facilities available.
PUBLIC AREAS (General):
Both the guest lounge and the dining
room are on the ground level, level with the reception area. Both lounge
and dining room are carpeted, as well as the stairs. The reception area
has a laminated wood-effect floor. A WC, which is located on the first
level, can be made available to guests.
BEDROOMS:
There are a total of 9 bedrooms,
2 of them have king beds, 6 have standard size double beds (some with
footboards), and one has a single bed (for single occupancy). There are
no ground floor bedrooms. All bedrooms have one ceiling light, and bedside
lamps. Fire alarms are sounded. Please advise us if you have a hearing
impairment and might not hear them. All bedrooms are carpeted. There are
no feather pillows in the bedrooms, and pets are not allowed in the guest
rooms, with the exception of guide dogs. Room 3 is best suited for a guide
dog-- it is one level up, and has a corner space for a dog bed, which
does not block access to the bathroom during the night. The house is centrally
heated, and temperatures can be adjusted in each room to suit individual
requirements.
BATHROOMS:
All guest rooms are fully en-suite
(sink, shower and toilet—no bathtubs). The en-suites are compact
with a single leaf door, and have laminate flooring, a ceiling light/extractor
fan, and a wall/shaver light. Walls, tiles and fixtures are white.
Additional information:
Choice for a cooked breakfast includes a full English breakfast, or a
full American breakfast (with homemade pancakes). A vegetarian version
of either breakfast is available. For those on a special diet, pancakes
